things i can do, that ai cannot.
a non-exhaustible list
it can’t dance around the house, and fist-pump the air after having received an exciting email that i cannot and will not talk about for superstitious jinxing reasons
it can’t then immediately throw up from anxiety and nerves
it can’t be woken up in the middle of the night by it’s dog, a border collie named Kip, the sweetest and most gentle of souls, having yet another seizure. it can’t worry how about much longer he will be here with you. and how empty your mornings will be without him.
it can’t hang out with its grandmother, the glorious, outstandingly funny woman that she is. It can’t learn from her wisdom, her resilience, her joy in the face of such outstanding loss. it can’t read a book in a single day and enjoy it for what it is — a human experience, the magic of story. it can’t eat chocolate like she eats chocolate; cold from the fridge and so hard it hurts her gums.
it can’t bake a cake and fuck it up so that’s it all goey in the middle and somehow, inexplicably, dry and crusty on the outside.
it can’t write.
read number six again. it cannot write. it can only regurgitate what has been written, and rearrange it in a way that you assume is new but is not
it cannot sit in the sun and drink a coffee and think about how beautiful the flowers look, how green the earth is, how blue the sky is, and how, after a long winter, the days are starting to draw out and this makes you feel more productive and alive and happy than you’ve felt in months. but then the coffee is so strong and you need to shit violently, and all at once, and suddenly the flowers are the least of your concerns.
it can’t laugh or cry or feel love or hatred or any of the other fantasically human of human feelings
it can probably do math (and for that, and that alone, i actually respect it. because fuck me, what magic that is.)
I could go on, and i probably will. but for now, i’m going to play with my dog, and then visit my grandmother, and talk about books and movies and the knitting she can’t quite get right.
